Melk and Durnstein
Melk can be found in the federal state of Lower Austria, next to the Wachau valley along the Danube. There is a large baroque Benedictine monastery called Stift Melk, which has a huge history dating back to the 11th century. Its most notable part is probably a chapel with baroque ornate gold interior. Here you can see also really a precious jewel - the Melk Cross decorated with diamonds, which dates back 1635. Right outside the city a renaissance castle named Schallaburg is situated.
Another interesting site in the Wachau wine-growing region is the town of Durstein founded around 1140 with its dominant - a parish church from 1721. It belongs to one of the most visited tourist destinations in Lower Austria.
