Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia and the country's largest city, lies on both banks of the Danube River. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two other countries.
Most historical buildings are concentrated in the Old Town. Bratislava's Town Hall is a complex of buildings erected in the 14th–15th centuries and now hosts the Bratislava City Museum. Michael's Gate is the only gate that has been preserved from the medieval fortifications, and it belongs to the oldest of the town's buildings. The University Library building, built in 1756, was used by the Parliament of the Hungarian Kingdom and much of the significant legislation of Hungarian Reform Era was enacted there. The Grassalkovich Palace, built around 1760, is now the residence of the Slovak president
