krakow_02_season2A former capital of Poland miraculously spared from the ravages of war, Krakow remains a citadel of Polish culture and antiquity. Located on the Vistula River, Krakow is considered by many to be the cultural capital of Poland and one of the finest medieval cities in Europe. It was named the European Capital of Culture for the year 2000 by the European Union, it has 28 museums and public art galleries, some of the best in the country. Poland's National Museum and Czartoryski Museum feature works by Leonardo, Raphael, and Rembrandt. In 1978 Cracow's historical centre was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Other interesting sites outside the city include Royal Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Tatra Mountains located 100 kilometres (62 mi) to the south, the historic city of Częstochowa, the former Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz, and Ojcowski National Park with Pieskowa Skała Castle.
